                <text>"La navegación en el antiguo Perú se desarrolló sobre la base de cuatro tipos de embarcaciones, con sus respectivas variantes en tamaño y material de construcción : La balsa de troncos de diversas especies de madera, la balsa de totora, la balsa de calabazas (para cruzar los rios) (Lorente, 1879) y la balsa de odres o piel de lobo marino. El uso de esta última en territorio peruano fue registrado en Ica [1547/1553]. Ilo [1804], Mollendo [1821] e Islay [1850] [Núñez, 1986]. Estas estructuras fortalecieron la relación del hombre prehispánico con el mar, no solo como fuente de recursos, sino también como área sagrada [Rostworowski, 2005; Cortez y Ausejo, 2012; Ruiz Romero, 2016]. // En la actualidad, en comparación con los pescadores que utilizan lanchas y botes de motor para sus faenas, son pocos aquellos que aún conservan el uso de embarcaciones de origen prehispánico -quedando hasta hoy solo la balsa pequeña de troncos o balsilla, y la de totora o caballito- debido a la competencia directa con los primeros. Como subrayó Prieto [2016], esto se debe a la pérdida de la extracción selectiva a la cual el pescador tradicional estaba acostumbrado, con el subsecuente beneficio económico que producía. // Por ello, resulta extraordinario que, a pesar de tener este y otros factores en contra -como veremos mas adelante-, aún se siga utilizando esta modalidad de pesca en la zona costera de La Libertad, Lambayeque, Piura y Tumbes, incluido los alrededores de las islas Lobos de Afuera, Lobos de Tierra, Foca y eventualmente Macabí.  // En este contexto, las balsillas y los caballitos de totora, son una herramienta de vida para los pescadores que aún las utilizan, manteniéndose como un testimonio activo de las culturas ancestrales. Asimismo, es una pesca que se vincula con la seguridad alimentaria, ya que suministra pescado y mariscos principalmente a las familias de las comunidades aledañas, promoviendo además una economía local, donde también participan las mujeres, que se dedican a la venta de estos productos [Figueroa et al., 2019].
