Echeverri [...] Los nonuya supervivientes pertenecen a los clanes Tronco de achiote, Mochilero y Gavilán. Su autoridad tradicional es el Consejo de ancianos de los tres clanes.. // En 1992, este grupo de nonuyas por linaje decidieron reafirmar su identidad nonuya y fundaron una nueva comunidad, que se denominó Peña Roja, formalmente dentro del Resguardo Indígena Nonuya de Villa Azul. Sólo los mayores  recordaban algunas palabras, pero la lengua viviente estaba ausente. Ellos comenzaron una búsqueda de nonuyas supervivientes en la Amazonia peruana y en otras regiones, que los condujo a ubicar tres  hablantes competentes: el anciano Mamerto Rios, en Leticia, Humberto Ayarce, en Puerto Arica [río Putumayo], y Rafael Grande en la banda peruana del río Putumayo..."</text>

                <text>"El nonuya es una de las tres lenguas sobrevivientes de la familia lingüística witoto, que también incluye el uitoto y el ocaina. Los nonuya fueron un pueblo numeroso, casi exterminado durante el período cauchero a principios del siglo xx. Otros grupos vecinos lograron retornar a su territorio ancestral después del éxodo cauchero. Solo dos hombres nonuya retornaron y se casaron con mujeres de otros grupos.  Sus descendientes (cerca de 100 personas) perdieron su lengua paterna y adoptaron la lengua de otros grupos [muinane y andoque]. Desde 1992, este grupo decidió reafirmar su identidad y formó una nueva comunidad [en contacto con últimos hablantes de la lengua en el lado peruano].
