                <text>"Ubicada en el altiplano andino, a pocos kilómetros de la ciudad de Puno, la feria de Vilque fue la más famosa de las ferias del sur peruano desde las primeras décadas del siglo XIX hasta la llegada del ferrocarril a Puno, que impulsó el crecimiento de Juliaca y condicionó la paulatina decadencia de la feria. El poblado de Vilque, de pocos centenares de habitantes, era en el siglo XVIII un centro de peregrinaje para rendir culto a la imagen del Señor de Vilque, en la época de Pentecostés. El incremento del mercado de exportación de lana de camélidos y la demanda de mulas provenientes de Argentina convirtieron este lugar, desde las primeras décadas del siglo XIX, en una feria donde decenas de miles de personas realizaban sus actividades aprovechando la multitud presente y el dinero circulante. Destacamos en la feria la importancia de la oferta de fibra, exclusivamente en manos de indígenas sin participación de haciendas, reforzando la propuesta de autonomía de las economías indígenas en la primera mitad del siglo XIX..."</text>
