Región atravesada diagonalmente por la cadena más occidental de los Andes [la Cordillera de Mérida], con prolongaciones litorales, de fácil acceso, ofreció las condiciones más favorables para el poblamiento temprano. Estos territorios han ejercido desde tiempos precolombinos una atracción continua sobre los pueblos de regiones vecinas, cuyas invasiones provocaron una extrema disgregación de las primitivas poblaciones indígenas. Se cita una de las primeras expediciones europeas realizadas en estos lugares, la de Federmann en 1530, que se detuvo durante seis semanas en cuatro pueblos diferentes que no se comprendían entre ellos, por hablar lenguas distintas. "...Actualmente, en el oeste de Venezuela, en la ribera occidental del lago Maracaibo, sólo existen dos grupos indígenas : Los Guajiros y los Paraujanos, de origen arawak, en la península que lleva sus nombres, pueblos pastores y pescadores; y las tribus Motilones no sometidas, de origen caribe, en la región montañosa y de los bosques en la frontera colombiana. Por lo demás, en todas partes las poblaciones indígenas casi han desaparecido. Profundamente españolizadas y mestizadas, tanto en la Cordillera como en las regiones bajas, han perdido, con sus caracteres físicos, sus lenguas y sus costumbres. Apenas si en escasas aldeas en las regiones cálidas y secas o en los páramos de acceso difícil de la Cordillera, se encuentran algunos tipos físicos bastante puros. En estas alejadas regiones, algunos ancianos conservaban aún nociones del lenguaje de sus antepasados; en el curso de estos últimos años parece que todos han desaparecido.
